Mary Carouba
Mary Carouba is a retired investigative social worker.  A former child and elder abuse investigator and expert witness in court cases, she continues to serve as an advocate for victims and their families.

Carouba's career began 25 years ago with Delancey Street Foundation, Inc., an organization committed to changing the world one person at a time. A popular speaker, educator, and performance artist whose material is geared toward social and family issues, she appears internationally before a broad spectrum of audiences. While her presentations and performances are designed to educate and entertain, they also serve as an outlet for expressing her commitment to social justice and advocating for social change.

Carouba was compelled by the events of September 11 to undertake this book as a way of taking positive action in the aftermath of tragedy. As one who works with many women in the law enforcement community, she was inspired to acknowledge the women who responded to the terrorist attacks after realizing that the media presented few role models for girls in its reporting of the event.

In the course of researching and writing this book, Carouba's experience as a social worker created a safe harbor for women rescue workers to share their stories and express their emotions. She continues to seek new venues for raising public awareness of the contributions of women at this historic event as a way of assisting them in their recovery.
